I had just finished watching Netflix’s Adolescence series. On the last episode, for what is probably one of the most devastating scenes I have ever seen in a TV show, the producers chose a song called Through the Eyes of a Child by the Norwegian singer Aurora.
Whenever I feel struck or deeply touched by a song, I often get this urgent need to sit down and make my own version of it. I don’t really understand why that is. I just know it scratches my brain in such a specific way. As if I somehow needed to be a part of what I had just heard, a part of something this inspiring and this beautiful. Maybe it’s a need to experience the song fully, or perhaps it’s a way for me to feel more connected to it. Regardless, that’s what happened with this song.
There are many artists that I admire for various reasons. But Aurora is a special case in the sense that I think her voice doesn’t compare to any other ones. And if I had to choose my favorite type of voice in this world, it would probably be hers. It’s a voice that fills a space without really needing any other instrument. It speaks (rather sings) for itself, almost like it has a life of its own. It’s soft, yet powerful. Unique, yet simple. The kind that gives you goosebumps on the first, second, third, and for all subsequent listens, which I think is pretty rare.
This post probably sounds like an Aurora fan page by now, but I genuinely think we could all use more music like hers.
I stumbled upon this short recording the other day and realized I had never done anything with it. I guess that’s what this space is for: sharing stuff I forgot existed.
With love,
